StudyPLANS provide a description of each design, a sample construction plan and the dimensions necessary to build. They are not standard plans in that they leave construction details to the builder. This keeps their cost way down, but demands more from the builder.
StudyPLANS are listed from small to large. Please click on a jump-link (below) or scroll as you please. If there is a photo, then we know of at least one has been built.
10ft x 4ft Barge / Scow "Ocean Cruiser"
B'TUGLY was designed for the Around In Ten round-the-world race. I don't recommend it, but it could be a fun boat in less challenging circumstances.. More on this design, here.
The Not-A-Gull Dory is a workhorse. It can be carried, rowed by one or two in either direction, launched in surf and offers a variety of seating arrangements and rowing positions. Read more in our essay Love Me Tender.
16ft x 4ft Barge / Scow Camper Cruiser
TRILOBYTE was the first TriloBoat. Designed to be built by a couple inside a week anywhere materials can be found, the idea was it could be built and cruised on location, then given away at the end of the adventure. Cheaper than hotels. We developed a detailed plan set which is now sold out. I hope to have a StudyPlan up soon! Read about building here and cruising here..
20ft x 4ft Camper Cruiser
Inspired by Phil Bolger's BIRDWATCHER, SCUTTLEFISH is intended for camper cruising under sail and oar power (outboard is optional). Rowing, sail handling and self-righting can be set up from within the cabin.
24ft x 4ft Beach Cruiser
This is a sailing platform barge, suitable for kids and light adventure. The large hatch can tilt up for sheltered sleeping quarters with sitting headroom, allowing extended over-nighters.
24ft x 8, 10 or 12ft Barge / Scow Cruiser
This is a small cruiser for one or two persons., laid out with a large central, standing headroom cabin. The pic is the Halifax Art Boat, a crowd-sourced build... It is now a floating gallery and sometime housing for artists-in-residence.
24ft x 8, 10, 12 or 16ft Scow Barge FLoathouse
SHANTY is designed as a compact live-aboard that won't often be moved. Builders may take the house in any of several directions, so this one is more of a starting point.
This design was used as a starting point for GREAT AUK,... you can follow that adventure and others at sailingauklet.com.
26ft x 8 or 10ft Barge / Scow Cruiser
SLACKTIDE is an economical cruiser designed around kneeling headroom flexi-space (similar to Japanese platform living), with standing headroom in the scuttle (the curved front deckhouse). Her large, low windows open onto the world around. We built this version and lived aboard her for six years in SE Alaska.
Please note that the leeboard arrangement in the StudyPLANs has been improved, and is discussed here.
32ft x 8, 10 or 12ft Barge / Scow Cruiser
LUNA is a comfortable liveaboard cruiser for a couple, designed around a sit-down interior, with standing headroom in the galley (trunk cabin area). We built and lived aboard a version (WAYWARD) for a decade in SE Alaska. People who come aboard are surprised at the commodious space below decks in so small a footprint.
32ft x 8ft Barge / Scow Cargo Vessel
CARGO is an economical, small freighter for inshore waters such as the Salish Sea.. This design was the start point for the design of CERES of the Vermont Sail Freight Project.
32ft x 8, 10, 12 or 16ft Barge / Scow Cruiser (or Houseboat @ 16ft)
We helped a friend build this vessel- MARY ELIZABETH - in 2 1/2 months. At 12ft beam, he designed the interior to sleep eight of his hunting buddies over weeks long hunting / fishing trips on the ocean side of Chichagof Island! That structure on the roof is a skylight/greenhouse over the dinette, which he added to grow vegetables.
24ft x 5/4ft Sharpei (Sharpie / Dory / Sampan) Pocket Cruiser
MUSTELID was built as an extended, rowing /sailing cruiser for two. She proved very comfortable and stable. Checkout her concepts, construction and shake-down cruise here.
